Schmidt embarked on his career in the 1950s, studying under the guidance of Philip Morton in Minnesota. He earned his degree from the University of Minnesota, where he taught jewelry crafting from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. His jewelry creations were a based on naturalistic shapes with a modern artisan's sensibility.
